Green Deal loft insulation

Unfortunately it has been scientifically proven that heat rises. As such, without sufficient insulation in your loft you’ll be wasting plenty of money as heat escapes through the roof. Adding this insulation is a sure-fire way to slash energy bills and with the Green Deal loft insulation scheme you won’t have to pay a penny upfront.

Loft insulation is one of the most effective home insulation measures, lasting for over 40 years and paying for itself many times over with the heat retained in your property.

And the Green Deal loft insulation scheme is a great way to get this vital energy efficiency measure in place, with the Government providing a loan for the installation. Paybacks to this loan are made only with the savings you make on heating bills too, which are calculated by an expert.

How much can I save with loft insulation?

With the recommended installation of 270mm lagging in your loft, you can save up to £200 each year. On top of this you can cut CO2 emissions by 730kg annually. Even if your loft has already insulated, it may still be worth finding out if there is sufficient lagging in place. According to Energy Saving Trust reports, if everyone in the UK had loft insulation of 270mm, there would be a combined saving of £500 million annually, and 2.7 million tonnes of CO2 cut.

Easy access lofts

If you have the advantage of an easy-to-access loft, with no damp problems evident, installation of loft lagging will be a quick and easy process for the professionals. Rolls of mineral wool insulation can be fitted between the joists in the loft, whilst a second layer goes across the joists.

Difficult access lofts

If, on the other hand, your loft is more difficult to access, you can still benefit from insulation. Instead, insulation can be blown into the loft by a professional with special equipment. A fire retardant fibre of mineral wool will be used and should only take a few hours.
Flat roofs

Do you still want to make the most of the Government’s Green Deal loft insulation scheme, but have a flat roof? Flat roofs are preferably insulated from the outside. A rigid insulation board can be fitted straight onto the roof’s weatherproofing layer and is best done when the roof needs replacing too. Remember, if you need to replace your flat roof, it must be insulated to comply with Building Regulations.

Flat roof insulation can slash your bills, cutting expenses by £190 a year and reducing CO2 emissions by 800kg annually.

Damp lofts

If you have any damp problems in your loft, make sure to seek professional advice before insulating. The insulation will keep heat in your home, in turn making your loft area colder. You don’t want condensation or damp to get worse, so always ask experts for their recommendations.
